During the last meeting of the Web Community Editorial Board, members kicked around the idea of restarting University-wide seminars and workshops that would cover popular topics ranging from best practices in Web design to common obstacles faced by the average ASU Web developer. Culled from that discussion, here's a list of possible topics, instructors and dates. All plans and information are tentative at best.
| Date | Topic | Instructors | Location |
|---|---|---|---|
| Late January 2008 | How to Apply the University Template (Tips and tricks for obtaining and fitting a site with both versions [XHTML and Drupal] of the header/footer template) |
Chris Puleo/Kathy Marks | TBD |
| Late February 2008 | Hacking the Template (Bending the University template to your will and forcing it to do your evil bidding. aka: Customizing your designs within the constraints of the University template) |
Daniel García-Mont/Billy Bailey | TBD |
| Late March 2008 | Writing and Editing Standards-Compliant CSS (A general tutorial on best practices for coding and troubleshooting Cascading Stylesheet rules on everything from layout to type) |
Chris Puleo/Kathy Marks | TBD |
| Late April 2008 | Making Your Site Accessible (Guidelines for coding in a way that allows your designs to be read and displayed consistently by a wide variety of user agents) |
Cameron Scholtz/Kathy Marks | TBD |
| Late May 2008 | Mobile Design and the ASU Web (What you can do to make sure your pages can be read and used by the milieu of mobile devices and cutting edge portable platforms like the iPhone) |
Nathan Gudmunson | TBD |
| Late June 2008 | Cross-Browser Testing Methods (Strategies for solving browser-specific display issues, including a live demonstration of an incompatible site makeover) |
Chris Puleo/Nina Kulhawy | TBD |
| Late July 2008 | Design for Usability (Toss out those bad habits of adding a header, a sidebar, a footer, and calling it a day. Design for the needs of your users and give them a great experience.) |
Cindi Farmer/Anish Adalja | TBD |
Again, these are merely suggestions to get the ball rolling. Please recommend solid dates, locations and topics at will. If you're listed as a proposed instructor, please advise in regard to your willingness and/or availability.
I'm very much interested in attending a workshop on modifying the university template--the sooner, the better!
Have you ever though of doing a Webinar using WebEx for this? Here is a link to the demo. I believe they are now ASU strategic partner.
ASU has licensed Adobe Connect Enterprise, which is similar to WebEx.
First, I apologize to anyone who has been waiting for these seminars/workshops to start. I dropped the ball on planning, coordinating and implementing them. It turns out that the ASU template is going through a design revision, so we should probably wait until at least the end of March to start the template sessions. Also, I've been informed that Adrian Teo and the Web Consulting group will be holding Drupal workshops frequently in the coming months, so, when the above seminars finally do get off the ground, they'll likely be reformatted to steer away from Drupal-specific topics.
Thanks for being patient. Stay tuned.
