Below are several comps for the redesign of the Online Tours. Please feel free to leave feedback and let us know if you have any ideas on how to make this site better for our users. Our goal is to provide a content rich tool (including accessibility information for the building and sustainability features). We also want to make sure this tool is intergrated with the ASU google maps, compatible with mobile technology, and fully accessible. For more information on the project, see http://wiki.asu.edu/tours. Thanks.

First and foremost, great job.  Great balance between text and visuals.  However, with me being a usability geek, I did notice a few things:

  1.  Drop down menus are not user friendly--many users have difficulties selecting from them, especially older users and the visually impaired.  It is recommended they be used as a last resort.
  2. There is the issue of redundant links located in both the header and the footer.  Redundant links = cognitive overload.
  3. The building page has a different header than the others.  Specifically, the search box contains the word, "Keyword," and has a radio button to select Site or Directory.  Personally, I think the text input box should be left blank and remove the radio buttons.
  4. Finally, (and also on the building page) what does sustainability, accessability, and prospective students have to do with online tours?  Their purpose is not very intuative.

Great work.  I can't wait to see the completed project!

P.S.  The interface on this site does not allow one to choose their own title.

Rex - Thanks for your input - I always respect your opinion.  Sorry for the confusion with the template, we had a couple people creating templates and one had an old header/footer.  I'll fix the image. And I'd love to talk in more detail about the nav -- let's connect tomorrow.

ps. I turned the comments' subject field on...  thanks for letting us know.

Thanks for the opportunity. Love window browsing ... the sites are well-organized.

Reviewed objectives and timeline, then viewed the pages through the eyes of a parent. two types of students and a campus neighbor.

Quick impressions, in no particular order:

  • Photos grabbed my attention first (noticed photo sessions are planned for the next couple of weeks.) What struck me was the lack of students/people in the photos and the use of sports images in opening views ... wondered how we could use these Web pages to reflect the NAU? Maybe interjecting tight photos of students using the buildings and spots on campus, with the static photos of the buildings?
  • The night photos ... with all the lights ... gave me a sense of safety and vibrancy at night. Recommend a healthy number of night images for that reason.
  • The building page looks really different from the top level pages ... and what caught my attention first, were all the icons. I wondered what they each meant. Will a guide be used on the page? Peeked at UA's site, which you listed for accessibility comparisons, and saw they have their icon guide on the left – takes up a lot of real estate on the page. Our icons struck me as "giant" in comparison to what else was on the page.
  • Two other observations ... about what was listed and what wasn’t. Wondered if in later revisions there could be another category: Foreign campuses. For instance, Sichuan University.
  • Also, saw that Fulton has it’s own tour. It stuck out on the page only because other colleges and facilities were missing, e.g., Biodesign, Carey, Herberger. Another category could be research facilities ... a way to highlight the ISTBs ... just a thought.

Hey Cindi,

I just wanted to make sure that we could get a specialized tour under "Other Tours" on the main page for the Museums on campus, mainly Tempe. I would be willing to help with gathering content and info for the pages on the tour. We could even combine it with the "Public Art" tour (if limited on space), making it "Museums & Public Art". There is going to be sub-page with all available tours, right?

Also, it would probably be good to include a "Computing Resources" Tour, and emphasis the computing sites, technology studio and a few classrooms. Again, will to help with gathering content and info. ;-)

Carol and Penny -  Thanks for your comments--they are quite meaningful, especially concerning the communication of our essence/mission as the New American University. We will also look into adding these additional tours (probably in phase two). Thanks for taking the time to comment...  collective intelligence is a beautiful thing.
