I just wanted to spread the word about The Dev Room, located in the Tempe campus Computing Commons, Room 358. I recently discovered that there are several machines with installations of JAWS available for testing by any University developer with an interesting in checking the accessibility of her/his pages. The room stays open for most of the business day and you don't need an appointment to use the machines - just log in with your ASURITE ID and password. PC #A08 is the recommended machine, but Lou Kelly, resident Dev Room expert, can set you up on another one if necessary. If you anticipate you or your team needing access to the machine for a block of several hours, feel free to contact Lou and ask him to reserve the machine(s).

To launch JAWS from PC #A08, click the "Adaptive Technology" icon on the Desktop and choose "JAWS 7.0". Warning: from then on, JAWS will speak every action you perform on the PC, including navigating within the OS. It's an enlightening experience.

Feel free to use this forum to report the results of your JAWS tests. It would be interesting to see how different ASU sites perform.

Update: JAWS is also available on all PCs in the ASU Computing Sites. Staff in the sites do not supply headphones, but you may bring your own. The headphone jack is usually a green plug on the front of the machine.

Great news about Jaws....here's a bit more.

Version 9.x is available from freedomscientific.org and is the current version.

A 40 minute timed demo version is available for download; if you need to demo longer than 40 minutes, you'll need to reboot.

See http://www.freedomscientific.com/fs_downloads/jaws.asp and look for "Free Demo..."

Cheers --
