What is SharePoint?

SharePoint is a set of tools, services, and development environment for online productivity and colaboration. SharePoint can be used for web based collaboration, application development, internet and intranet sites, and more.

What can SharePoint do to help me?

SharePoint is intended to empower teams through online collaborative workspaces. SharePoint provides many features out of the box including the following: Document Library Wiki Library Discussion Board Shared Calendar Tasks Surveys Web Pages Many of these web based features can also synchronize with Outlook and provide RSS feeds for fast access. Customized alerts help users stay in contact and aware of changes to important information. Additional tools can also be created by using custom lists or writing asp.net applications. No coding is necessary to use all the features previously listed. Additional web based applications can be developed and run as part of SharePoint. SharePoint is not a replacement for a fileserver. Documents that are no longer being worked on should be stored elsewhere. The default maximum upload size for a site is 50mb.

How do I get one?

An independent SharePoint site is called a site collection. Click here to request a SharePoint site collection. You are responsible for the overall design but you are not alone. UTO has training materials and is available for consultation on your site. You can also have your site based off an available site template that includes a great deal of functionality built in. How do users access SharePoint?

Your site will have an internet accessible URL such as https://YOURSITE.sharepoint.asu.edu or https://YOURDEPT.sharepoint.asu.edu/YOURSITE. Depending on the authenticaiton method you use, some users may need to include ASURITE\ as part of their username to sign in. All sites are encrypted through SSL and have a mobile version for handheld devices. This mobile version can be reached by adding /m to the end of the URL. You can limit who can login to your site using SharePoint groups, Active Directory groups, or Exchange Distribution Lists. Anyone can collaborate with you on your site. Non ASU users are given an asurite ID and access to SharePoint. If you have a large number of non ASU users you can be given access to create their accounts.
