With some minor reworking and tweaking of content placement, I feel like this comp is going in a good direction.

I would recommend moving sparky down to the footer, as on the current homepage. This would allow more room in the left column for text/liquid content. The "quick links" seem a little lost to me; I feel like if I wanted to get to a link quickly, I would want it to be in the left or right column, toward the top of the page.

I personally like having only one "featured" story, with some of the older stories falling off the page, as it is. However, there is something a bit scary about having the design of the page rely on one large, central image. I'm not sure how many people would have access to switch that image out regularly. The way it sits, if a low quality image were to be on the main page for several days, it could greatly affect the feel of the ASU website as a whole. On the current website, if one of the images is of low quality, there is a good possibility that the other two look nice, so it's not as big of a deal. I hope that makes sense.

Rather than have the image relate directly to the featured story, the image can be used to deliver a sense of community which is one of the objectives of the site redesign.  I believe the picture that was used on the comp successfully delivers this voice.  Similar pictures could be rotated in this area.

If, for instance, the image from "Glamour places... " was the prominent image on the comp, would the site be delivering a sense of community?  It's important to remember that pictures are an excellent opportunity to set the tone and voice of a site.  On the other hand, they can also work against the site's objective if an inappropriate photo is used.

Another option would be to remove the macrocontent below the picture and keep all features in the right-hand upper column.

Oh, and I didn't mean for the paragraph about the one large, central image to be about your comp specifically. I was sort of replying to all the comps. And, I don't mean to say that it couldn't work, I really like the design aspect of simplifying into one large image..I was more offering a "have you thought of this?".

I've noticed the following usability issues on a majority of the comps:

  • Remove repeated link items in footer (search, a-z index) as this reduces the users' cognitive efforts in locating desired information and/or links
  • I'm confused with the target profile of visitors &friends. There is some ambiguity here.  Aren't parents and prospective students visitors and/or friends?  If this is indeed a target audience, I would suggest changing the label to something that more appropriately defines the audience's name.

This design is fairly simple. From a student's perspective: This design is easy to navigate and I feel like there isn't a lot of information to tackle (even though there really is.) Essential links are laid out in a manner that is logical. I feel that AJAX could be used under the "Information For" to allow users to scroll through different links without having to leave the home page. For example: Under "Information For" it would be nice to see 3 to 4 other categories which a user can "scroll" through. The categories could be: Information For: Parents, Students, Community, Prospective Students.Â
